Recently a local couple visited many of the Canadian War memorial sites in France. This videoconference will be a slide show presentation with commentary about their trip and experiences. This talk will give an overview of the memorials and some insights into organizing a similar journey.
I think this will be something we can remember after we see it! Lets make this Remebrance Day a extra special one.

Sept. 29 from noon-1:30 Law @ Lunch: Small Claims Coirt and How it Works
This is an introduction to 'Small Claims Court' (now called Provincial Court - Civil). It will give you a chance to learn about:
-What kinds of cases the court hears
-The limit for claims
-How lawsuits in the court are started and defended
-Procedure before trial including processes like mediation
-Evidence and witnesses; and
-Conducting trials and what actually happens there.

Oct. 6 noon-1:30 Law @ Lunch: Residential Tenancies
-Rent
-Security deposits
-Termination of tenancies, and
-Notice.
These are some of the things that will be discussed in this look at legal rights and resonsibilities of people renting places to live.

Oct 13 at noon-1:30 Law @ Lunch: Seperation and Divorce
In the course of exploring what can happen legally when a couple decides to seperate or divorce, the speaker will discuss issues like:
-The process- what is the court process? - are there other ways, like mediation or collaborative law, to try and how do they work?
-Child maintenance, custody (parenting) and access (contact) - how the children will be looked after
-Spousal maintenance - the extent to which one separating or divorcing spouce will have to support the other
-Matrimonial property - how the property will be divided.

Oct. 20 fron noon-1:30 Law @ Lunch: Losing A Job & Wrongful Dismissal
In this presentation you'll learn about:
-When a dismissal is 'wrongful'
-Rights and responsibilities of someone who loses a job, and
-The amount of compensation that may be awarded to wrongfully dismissed employees and how it is determined.

Oct 27 at noon-1:30 Law @ Lunch: Law and Living Together:
What are the legal rights and responsibilities of unmarried people living together as spouses and how do they differ from those of married people? What is a cohabination agreement and how important is it for people in such relationships to have one? What is an adult interdependent partner and what is the significance of becoming one? This presentation provides an opportunity to look at questions like these. The topics for dicussion include care and support of children, inheritance, and property.

Oct. 28 noon-1:00 Cutting out Lattes to meet long-term goals (or budget really isn't a four-letter word)!
Its amazing what learning to budget can do for reaching your goals. Everyone's budget should consider your budget "personality" and what's important to you. Learn what's important when budgeting, things to make the process easier and what the end result can be. Join Joanne Metzgar, Investment and Retirement Planner as she walks you through some budget concepts.

And learn the important really true lesson of really why NOT to eat spiders.

Robert Heidreder carries the antics of years in the primary classroom into his active poetry presentations. He uses rhythme, rhyme, puppets, dance, movement and stories to entertain and engage children as they play with poetry. They learn poems, see where his ideas come from, how he has students write group poems and see the lively pleasure a poem a day can have. Robert Heidbreder was born near Mississippi River in 1947. In 1970 he moved to Vancouver to pursue his degree in Classical Languages. In 1975, he became a Canadian citizen, and completes his teaching degree at UBC. Soon after he started teaching primary children in Vancouver, he began writing because he wanted the children in his class introduced to a liveliness of language that matched their natural bounce, enegry, imagination, and playfullness. His first book was Don't Eat Spiders, (1985); Drummheller Dinosaur Dance (2004); his latest is Crocodiles Play, published in the fall of 2008. In 2002, he won the Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence and in 2005 retired from teaching after 30 years. His presentation to children in schools and at festivals help keep the child within him alive, awake, laughing and rhyming.

The society raises funds to ensure that the volunteers at the Picchu Alto Shelter and the street children shelter Azul Wasi will be able to support the children who arrive in need of care. Members of the organization will give a presentation on their latest trip to Peru, things they have accomplished, and their goals for the society in the future.

My name is Stephanie Drew (I've worked here for three years so you probably know me by now) and I have the opportunity to be our library's CAP Youth Intern until Christmas. To our readers:

This year at the library we have two CAP youth interns. The Community Access Program (CAP) Youth Initiative (YI) is an Industry Canada initiative which aims to provide work experience for young Canadians between the ages of 15 and 30 in CAP Sites across Canada. One of the chief goals of this program is to increase the public's use of information and communications technology. Stephanie Drew and Neechel Steed will be available to teach free computer classes, answer questions and provide one-on-one help to anyone who needs it. The next available class will be held on February 6th at 5:00 pm. This class will be teaching patrons how to make flyers on the computer. All classes will be taught at the Raymond Public Library.

Summer Reading Club 2008

Once again we would like to thank the Raymond Lions Club for providing funding for our TD Summer Reading Club. This year we are pleased to also partner with the Raymond Parent Link Centre. The program runs from July 7, 2008 to August 21, 2008 at the following times:

Children 0-6 meet at the Parent Link Centre on Tuesdays and Thursdays along with their parent/caregiver from 10:00 to 12:00

Children 7 - 12 meet at the Library on Mondays thru Thursdays from 1:30 to 3:30.

Parents may register their children at the Library or at the Parent Link Centre.

April Displays

This month we have an adorable display of procelain birds in our curio cabinet. They are made by a local artist, Rita Olson. Rita has her own kiln, so she makes her creations all on her own. They will be on display until June.

We also have had a permanent display of 3D puzzles donated to the library. Our patron's favourite seems to be the Missisppi Steam Boat. Of course, the little girls just love Cinderella's castle.

Red Hot Reads
Choose a book from our "Red Hot Reads" display. The only criteria for this display was that the cover had to be red in honour of Valentine's Day.

Freedom to Read Display
For the Month of February you can view our "Burnings and Bannings in History" Display. It gives a little history on books that have been challenged in the past. You might be surprised to find that it includes some good old favorite classics.

Life in the Library

Well, it is the middle of February and I've almost finished all the reports that have to be done by the end of February.

Our Library System has also implemented a new Intigrated Library System (computer program). It went live yesterday. It was very exciting, but hard on the old brain as well. I'm sure that once I get used to it I'm going to love it. It is the Unicorn System that is used by thousands of libraries all over the world. It is a big step up from our old DOS based program. This one is Windows based and looks very nice.

Our library clients have been really patient with us as we are learning this new program. We love all our library users!!

Gulliver's Travels

Well, I had a post from the Teen Online Reading Club about Gulliver's Travels and I realized that I haven't read the whole book. I've always read the part about Lilliput, but never finished. So I am currently reading Gulliver's Travels.

Does anyone have a favorite land that Gulliver travelled to?

Charles Dickens Christmas Story

One of my goals for this holiday season was to read some Christmas stories by Charles Dickens. I read "Cricket on the Hearth" and totally enjoyed it. Of course, sometimes Dickens can be a little hard to read because the old wording he employs is not too easy to read. But once you get into the story it is really enjoyable.

It only took me an afteroon to read. Only three chapters in total. If you have read the story please let us know what you think.

Christmas Reading Contest

I spent most of today making paper chain links. Over 200 this morning and my student assistant made even more this evening. Our Christmas Reading contest is for all ages. For young children they can put their name on a paper chain link for every book they read or have read to them. For children who read chapter books they get a link for every 25 pages they read. For young adults and adults they get a link for every 50 pages they read.

On December 20 we will pick links from our chain and those people will win prizes. It is a really good way to encourage people to read and to decorate our library for Christmas. Sometime before Christmas I will post a picture of our library with the paper chain link around it.

Last year we went around the library one and a half times. We are hoping we can go even more this year.

It was fairly busy in the library today. Lots of people used the computers and a number just stayed and read. It is cold, snowy and icy here in our town. The library is a good place to hole up and stay warm for a little while.
